Movie Screening & Discussion ~ Race: The Power of an Illusion Part I - The Difference Between Us

Tuesday, February 286:00—7:45 PMCommunity Meeting RoomCharlton Public Library40 Main St., Charlton, MA, 01507

Join us to view and discuss this 3-part PBS documentary series that asks a question so basic it’s rarely raised: What is this thing called ‘race’? What we discovered was that many of our conventional assumptions about race—for instance, that the world's peoples can be divided biologically along racial lines—are wrong. Yet the costs of racism are very real, and can even have biological consequences.

Part I: The Difference Between Us examines science (including genetics) that challenges our assumptions that humans can be bundled into three or four groups according to physical traits.

Part II: The Story We Tell uncovers roots of race in America, how it was legitimized and adopted, and how it continues to serve to rationalize and justify social inequalities.

Part III: The House We Live In uncovers how race resides in politics, economics and culture--not nature--and reveals how social institutions channel resources, status and wealth to white people.

The screenings and discussions are free and open to the public. You can attend any OR all of the sessions. Registration is not required.

These will be facilitated by educator and local author, Michelle Chalmers. Michelle received a BSW from Wheelock College in Boston and an MSW from San Diego State University and is a racial justice educator, facilitator of diversity conversations, and author of the children’s books The Skin on My Chin, The Story of METCO, and Vitamin D and Me.
