Build Your Own Glider with Ed the Wizard

Wednesday, August 72:00—4:00 PMDexter HallCharlton Public Library40 Main St., Charlton, MA, 01507

This STEM workshop (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) covers the basics of aerodynamics, flight control, Space Flight, and Aviation History. S.T.E.A.M. education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Ed the Wizard designed the airplane kits we will use in this STEM program; his experience comes from a lifetime of aircraft enthusiasm and model building. Library patrons will receive a model kit containing all of the materials required to cut out and assemble their own glider or airplane. Flight properties are introduced to the patrons: thrust, drag, lift, and gravity, as well as flight control, the cause and effects of air flowing over the control surfaces. During the construction phase, there will be a Q&A discussion about the history of flight and space exploration. Upon the completion of the models, using this knowledge, patrons will be challenged with flight tests such as: length of flight, flight accuracy, controlled banks and turns, and stunts.

Best for ages 7 and older. Registration is required.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Charlton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
